About Greyhounds
- Greyhounds are affectionate, friendly dogs who thrive on attention and human companionship. They make terrific pets. A greyhound is quite content to be a "couch potato" and spend most of the day sleeping.
- With proper care greyhounds have a life expectancy of 12-14 years.
- Most greyhounds are very tolerant of children and will usually walk away rather than growl or snap if children become overbearing.
- Greyhounds are friendly by nature and socialize well as a result of encounters with other greyhounds in the kennel. Most can learn to accept cats, but the introductory period must be closely monitored.
- Racing greyhounds are kennel broken, which means they are trained to go outside and keep their kennels clean. Walk them frequently at first, and they quickly learn that their new home is the place to keep clean and outside is where they go to relieve themselves.
- Greyhounds are the second fastest land animal! They achieve their incredible speed (up to 45 m.p.h.) in three strides.
- Greyhounds are sighthounds. They can see clearly for a distance of a half mile.
- Greyhound males stand between 26 and 30 inches tall and weigh between 65 and 80 pounds. The females are slightly smaller. They come in many colors: black, white, several shades of brindle, fawn, blue, red or a combination of these colors.
- Greyhounds have little body fat which makes them sensitive to heat, cold or rain. If outside for more than a short time in cold weather they should be protected with a coat.
Seniors and Special Needs Program
We are dedicated to helping all
greyhounds with a special focus on retired broods and special need greyhounds.
After one visit to a greyhound breeding farm and seeing the broods it was
impossible not to help them. These beautiful dogs sit in crates day after day,
year after year. They have given their lives as racers and broods. In return,
they spend the rest of their lives confined in cramped quarters never knowing
what it is like to be loved, to be part of a family. These ladies are truly the
forgotten ones.
Leg Up Fund
Each year countless greyhounds lose their lives after
suffering a broken bone while racing. One must assume that it is not
economically feasible for owners to pay for repairs on a dog who will never race
again. BUT we are not owners....we are people who work tirelessly to save the
lives of these gentle souls. It takes massive amounts of fundraising just to
keep an adoption group afloat and there is very little left over to cover the
costs involved to repair these broken limbs. These dogs all deserve a chance for
a future with a loving family. You can help by donating to the fund through the DONATIONS
page or by adopting one of these special hounds after he or she has recovered here with us.
We estimate the orthopedic expense on these dogs to be anywhere from a few
hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the need for extensive surgery. All of these fees will be paid by the "Leg Up" fund and will not
be passed on to any group or individual who adopts one of these wonderful dogs.
Please visit the GAF "Leg Up" fund page for the latest news about this worthy cause!
