Annual Doggie Wash Fundraiser

Our recent dog wash at Concord Pet raised $671!!! We washed 36 dogs and finished 16 nail trims in 90 degree weather for the GAFNE Annual Dog Wash fundraiser. It wasn't officially summer yet, but it sure felt like the dog days of summer had arrived.

Special thanks to Concord Pet in Hockessin for hosting the event and to all the volunteers and people who contributed to make the event a success for GAF greys in need.

You'll see dogs striking some super silly poses for the camera. Given how many greys enjoy roaching, we bet there is a GAFNE grey who could take first prize in an upside down contest.

Send us your silliest upside down, big grin roach pics to newsletter@adoptagrey.org and we'll feature a selection in the fall issue!

We hope you enjoyed this edition!

Life is often hectic to the point we rarely have time to stop, let alone slow down and smell the roses, or in the case of Mr. T and Dave pictured on the right, graze in the grass :)

Thanks for taking time out of your day to read our newsletter, hopefully with a grey or two or three by your side. We hope you enjoyed what we put together and maybe learned a thing or two. We would love to hear what you and your hounds are up to this summer.

Send your funny stories, heartwarming moments, favorite recipes, photos, tips, advice and more to newsletter@adoptagrey.org.

Please note submissions may be featured in our next newsletter, on ahome4greys.org or on our Facebook fan page. If you prefer to only appear in the newsletter please let us know. We respect your privacy and that of your hounds! Many thanks in advance for sharing your experiences with us.

Summer 2010 - Volume 5/Number 1

In our efforts to share with others about greyhounds and how wonderful they are as pets, keeping the conversation simple and focused is the key to success. First impressions are very important, first conversations are too. Remember, we are opening a dialogue for a greyhound to have a chance to find a home.

Please speak for me

Briar patiently waits for a home
Briar patiently waits

I depend on you to be my voice and advocate when people ask you “how are greyhounds as pets?” I need you to speak for me and share with them things I need and what would make me happy. This is what I would simply say…

  • I need a loving home where I am a member of the family
  • I would be very appreciative of my home, my family, a soft bed, good meals and love…lots of love.
In return, I will always be your best friend. I will smile to greet you each time you come home. My tail will wag, my body will wiggle, I might even talk or roo for you - all because I love and appreciate my family and my home. These are the things I would say if I could speak to humans...but I cannot. I need you to say these things for me. They are most important for people to know...for me to have a chance to find a loving home.

7th Annual GAFNE Picnic

On May 23 many humans and hounds gathered at Banning Park for the 7th Annual GAFNE picnic. Adopters, volunteers and supporters came together to celebrate and renew their commitment and dedication to each and every greyhound that needs us.

This year's guest of honor was Jerry Murray Schwartz Varnberg who snoozed most of the 1,000 mile ride to be there along with his BFF (best furry friend), Ernie, from South Carolina. Everyone was happy to see their humans too: Jerry's Mom, Marilyn Varnberg, co-founder of GAF and Ernie's Mom, Mary Prather from GAF Southeast.

The day was just as we hoped: good food, good friends and greyt fundraising! We raised over $5,000 from the 50/50 raffle, gift basket raffle and live auction. Congratulations to the 50/50 winner, Evelyn Barrisa, picked by Jerry Murray himself (watch the video) with the help of a little cream cheese.

A big thanks to everyone who helped sell raffle tickets, donated items for the baskets and live auction, and last but definitely not least, to those who bid generously in the auction. We would also like to thank Kurt for providing music and acting as MC as well as auctioneer!

Delicious picnic fare was once again prepared by Theresa & Colleen and dessert was a beautiful cake made by students of the culinary department at Hodgson Vo-Tech High School. There were doggie games including a longest tail and rooing contest, complete with prizes. A little friendly competition was fun, though it goes without saying that in our eyes, and especially our hearts, all GAFNE hounds are winners! Then there was a dog-only dessert, a cake made especially for them by Diane Mayer, formerly of Happy Dog Healthy Dog and longtime friend and supporter of GAF.

What started as a simple idea several years ago has turned into an highly anticipated springtime event. The relaxed setting and friendly atmosphere are ideal to welcome new adopters and their hounds, connect and catch up with friends and hounds we don't often see, and remember those who are no longer with us.

One guest commented that her happiest moment was walking up to the pavilion and seeing all the greyhounds lying around so comfortable and enjoying themselves. She said it was like seeing one big, happy family. We hope everyone enjoyed this same spirit of the picnic and look forward to seeing even more humans and their hounds at the 8th Annual Picnic in May 2011!

Meet the "New Kid" at Grey Haven!

Henry is one of the most special greys to come into GAF's care in a long time. All he wants is a mom and dad who will love him as much as he loves them! He was underweight and had a urinary tract infection when he arrived, but he is on well on his way to health and will be ready for his new home soon! Why not write Henry a welcome note on his wall? He'd love a sponsor too!

Spotlight on Safety
Check Your Hound's Collar!

by Pat Adams
At the recent GAFNE picnic, I indulged in one of my newest addictions, seasonal collar change for the greys! My blue, Dream, is now wearing a new collar that we won during the raffle. As I was doing the change I noticed wear and tear on her old collar. From a distance it had appeared just fine. So maybe we all need a reminder about checking the martingale collars on a regular basis. Wear and tear varies from hound to hound. There are a few things that should be checked regularly.

  • How’s the fit? Collars should be snug and a challenge to remove. You should be able to slip only a couple of fingers under it.
  • Wear and tear – check to make sure there are no rips or frays. This is important for those that have dogs that scratch often.
  • How are the tags? Do you use tag bags? If so, are they secure to the collar?
Only recently did I learn about
Long Dog Leather Works and their tag bags that wrap around the collar. I know I’m a little late in learning about them, but I certainly feel more secure. The Velcro on the older bags was wearing thin. No matter what kind you use, it needs to be secure to the collar.

Speaking of tags, if your GAFNE tag is worn or gets lost, please contact us at adoptions@adoptagrey.org for a new one!

Remember - make sure you have a tag with your current contact information. If you are going away for vacation and your dogs are staying with friends, it might be a good idea to have a new tag made with the temporary contact information. Instant ID tags are available at PetSmart and PetKraze.

These are just a few reminders to help keep our hounds safe at home and on the road. Enjoy your summer!

At the start of summer we have already experienced more 90+ degree days to date as we did the entire summer of 2009. After a record breaking winter which posed a number of risks to our canine companions we now have to watch out for hot weather related health issues and concerns.

Take extra precautions during any summertime activity for your greyhound. Even simple turnouts for potty breaks and playtime need to be monitored during really hot days. Morning hours can quickly warm up too. Senior greyhounds are particularly sensitive and can overheat quickly. An ounce of prevention goes a long way in keeping your hound cool and safe this summer.

Learn how to recognize and treat the signs of heatstroke as well as the best ways to prevent this life threatening condition.

The Dog Days of summer bring the sweltering hot temperatures, but can also bring summer fun for your greyhound when cooling off in a doggie pool! It’s a great way to let your greyhound cool off in his/her own style. Some like to lie in the pool, others just put their front feet in and splash the water a bit (see Scooter's video on the left!) and some think it a big doggie water bowl :)
