News from Grey Haven

So what is it we do down on the farm????

One of the difficult aspects of greyhound adoption is taking back returned dogs. Sometimes the return means a family is fractured or someone is ill…sometimes the reasons are vague and the dog will be better off in another home.

And sometimes, we go looking for “our” dogs.

Six and a half years ago, Bob and I had the dubious pleasure of caring for a litter of greyhound pups. There were nine of them…all red… looked exactly alike and all of them were like little piranha, chewing up everything they could get their sharp little teeth on!

In a short time, they were all adopted out, two going to a lady in North Carolina who was going to lure course with them when they grew up. Over the years we lost contact with her and it was purely by accident that I read on the internet that 66 dogs were confiscated from a home in North Carolina…the majority of them being greyhounds. It was too much of a coincidence for me to let it go.

Many phone calls later it was determined that this was indeed the home that Scarlet and Savannah had gone to but no one had come across two six and half year old red sisters with no tattoos in their ears. I was sure they had disappeared. It was a week later that I received the call I had been hoping for…Scarlet and Savannah had been found! They were, however, in terrible shape…underweight…full of fleas and ticks, open sores, patchy, dry skin and fur. And they had spent almost six years of their lives living in crates, not always getting out to potty.

While this is also a legal issue and the woman is being prosecuted, my concern was for the safety of these two dogs. They started out as unwanted by the industry and then spent their lives living in filth, not really wanted there either. But WE wanted them! The responsibility for GAF dogs does not end when they are adopted and we did everything we could to bring them home.

Thanks to a wonderful friend in North Carolina, Scarlet and Savannah were brought back to us about three weeks ago. After spending two weeks with Mary in her home where they were pampered, fed and cared for, they came home to us where Bob and I will help them regain their health and teach them that the world can be a kind place and it’s a good thing to live in a home filled with toys and good food and love.

Both girls have gained about ten pounds and are starting to look like little greyhounds again. Hair is growing back, sores are healing and the amazing greyhound spirit is evident in both of them. They look forward to company…love being with other dogs….and most of all, love being loved. Soon it will be time to finish up their vet work and look for a home for both of our girls. And this time they will go to a family who will give them the lives they deserve.

Let me know if you are interested!

Update!

Scarlet found a forever home and is bouncing around with her new brother and sister greyhounds. Savannah is still patiently waiting. Anyone ready to open to a heart and home to her?

GREYHOUND HEALTHCARE & SAFETY

Keeping Your Canine Companion Cool during the Extreme Summer Heat

It’s paramount during these miserable summer days to carefully watch your furry friends for signs that the heat is getting to them.

The best way to keep your pet cool? Avoid exercising him during the day; instead, aim for times early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is no longer visible, and on the really oppressive days where the humidity makes it miserable even when the sun isn’t out, skip exercising him altogether. Take a couple of bottles of water with you to wet him down if he seems to be getting too warm and take him back home. While dark coated pets tend to suffer more with the heat, those with light coats are more susceptible to sunburn. Be especially careful of dog parks and other fenced in areas where several pets are running together – often times greyhounds will continue running even when they are struggling, just to keep up with the competition. As always, if your pet has a physical condition (heart problem, breathing problem, old injury, etc.) that could be aggravated, it’s best to prevent him from running full out – he’s simply not in top physical form anymore and could damage himself further. Needless to say, keep fresh water available at all times and encourage him to drink if he is getting too warm.

Flossie

A special thank you to everyone who participated in this summer's doggie washes at Concord Pets. Dedicated volunteers headed by Lisa Fontalbert suds up lots of pups for a total of $1180.00. The good clean fun was a greyt chance to catch up with former fosters, newly adopted pups and more.

Annual Giving Campaign Results -

The first annual giving campaign was a huge success. To date the donations total over $4,100. Thank you to all the adopters, friends and volunteers of GAFNE for the generous donations that will in turn help so many greyhounds in desperate need of costly medical attention. Check here to see some hounds that have or will be helped with these funds.

Thank you Lois Houff for your time and effort which made this drive possible!

When supporters use these cards at participating merchants, the merchants contribute a percentage of the sale to the designated organization(s).

To sign up, visit www.escrip.com. GAF's group ID is 155001774. Please check out the website to see if merchants that you use frequently participate in the program. And tell your family and friends. The more supporters we have, the more money we can raise to help the greyhounds!

December 21, 2003. This was "D" day. I'd met him 3 days before but now he was coming to stay forever. His racing name had been Gomer. When I pictured the slowness of Gomer Pyle I couldn't understand why anyone would give that name to a fast dog. I had tested to see if he answered to it and he didn't plus I had heard that not many greyhounds get called by their names in the kennel. So I decided a new life deserved a new name. Because it was almost Christmas and I love to write what could be better then Dickens? His crate was up in the computer room, where I can usually be found. A fleece bed lined the inside along with several new stuffed animals. I'd also set up a comforter and quilt beside my bed. The month before I poured over the "racing greyhounds for dummies" book but I was still nervous. Heidi arrived and the big boy seemed larger then ever. Even though I'd had large dogs in the past they had all arrived in small packages not instantly big. Dickens walked around the living room acquainting himself with the area as Heidi and I completed the paper work that would say he was mine and I was his. My children are grown and I wasn't sure how rambuncious Misty (the pug) and Dickens would get so I opted for a 4 foot table top tree. Dickens went over and sniffed. Even though it was artificial I guess a tree is still a tree. Up went his leg! Heidi yelled NO! She must have thought, at least briefly, that after all this work of trying to match me up with a greyhound and her driving an hour each way twice in just a few days before Christmas (when she had 3 little girls and a husband at home) she'd be returning with her foster dog in tow. At her voice Dickens flew over to his new mama, not realizing that I might be rather angry since we had installed new carpet the month before. The craziness of it broke the ice and I had to laugh. I guess the saying holds that "boys will be boys." I was now pretty sure he would like living with us. We had 17 trees in the yard. Heidi showed me how to roll and tie a large towel around his lower waist so that if he had an accident it would be caught and not get on any furniture or carpet. He did not seem pleased. Kinda like a 2 year old being told he still has to wear diapers at night. Like a good mother working on potty training I deligently took him out every 2 to 3 hours when he was awake for the next few weeks and as soon as I heard his tags rattle in the morning. There were no more accidents or marking his living area again.
