News from Grey Haven

Years ago, when Bob and I first walked through a brood barn at a Greyhound breeding farm, we vowed that someday, GAF would have a safe place just for the old girls where they could wait for that special family to take them home.

The experience of seeing first hand how the broods live on these farms was something that we could not forget. While the dogs on any greyhound farm are noisy and can't wait for someone to come along and give them attention, the old girls stand in their crates and watch you walk the aisle. They follow you with their eyes, but they are silent. Their stares are vacant.....their days are spent in crates. When they are sent to be bred they come back to the same crate, waiting to be put in the whelping house to have their babies. When it's time to wean the pups, mom goes back into that brood barn and the cycle starts all over again.

Thanks to the generosity of the greyhound public all across the country, Mercury's raffle raised over $9,000 for GAF!!! Ground was cleared and leveled, old fencing taken down, a cement pad was poured and after a few weeks, our new brood kennel was installed! It is quite exciting to look out over the back turn out yard and see the empty building just waiting for it's first occupants!!!

Next week the electrician comes to give us an estimate. We will be pricing new crates for the girls and looking to put in a whole kitchen area and figuring out where that couch is going to go......these girls have lots of time to make up for and learning the joys of the couch is first on our list!!!

Thank you all for allowing us to bring our dream for the old girls to reality. Our first occupant is our very own Dizzy who will be 14 this summer......she wanted us to tell you all to be sure and come and visit her and her friends this summer, and maybe, just maybe, you might fall in love with one of the girls and decide to give them a chance to spend what's left of their lives on your couch.

Dizzy

Thank You Wilmington Borders!

GAFNE volunteers Gretchen Baxter-Walker with Moonlight Bay and Lois Houff with Dolcie and Scooby present a Plaque of Appreciation to Wilmington Borders manager Jim Lawson for all his support and kindness to GAFNE the last 3 years.

Borders has welcomed our greyhounds through monthly Meet & Greets as well as the Holiday Gift Wrap Days in December.

Not only is Borders a great source of fund raising but a wonderful opportunity to reach potential adopters who have no pets and don't see us at pet store meet & greets.

Thank you also to PetValu in Fairless Hills, PA. where Meet & Greets have been held for over 2 years.

Thank You Fairless Hills PetValu!

Whenever we hear about an animal rescue/adoption organization, we think "How wonderful...those animals are so lucky because they'll get another chance at life." But sometimes it doesn't work out that way. In fact, sometimes the animals would have been better off if they hadn't been rescued at all. Sadly, it's happened again, this time in Athens, Alabama, where an adoption organization has been exposed for taking in greyhounds from the local track and housing them in horrific conditions.

Greyhound Adoptions of Florida, led by Marilyn and Bob Varnberg, was given a tip that an organization in Alabama had greyhounds in critical condition and something must be done immediately. Some of their wonderful volunteers went to Alabama and posed as adopters, and what they found made them physically ill; more than 50 greyhounds living in crates inside a house, emaciated and covered in filth and open wounds, wallowing in urine and feces

They were able to get pictures and rushed loff to the local authorities, asking them to intervene. They were also able to get 8 of the most critical dogs out of the house, and those dogs were brought back to Grey Haven, in Sparr, Florida, for much needed treatment and care. 19 more dogs went to a wonderful facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, but while the owner originally agreed to release all of the dogs, he soon changed his mind and approximately 20 dogs remain with him.

Here is how you voted for Making your grey's forever house a home

Q. What changes have you made since adopting your grey(s)?

Possible answers:

larger car or SUV
new furniture
larger bed
a different house
2 or more of the above
all of the above!

And for an even better illustration, here are Maggie and Sam in their hound mobile.

While a picture is worth a thousand words, here is what the adopters of Maggie and Sam had to say about the changes they've made since welcoming the retired races into their hearts and home.

What changes! With Sam and Maggie coming to their home with us we revamped our thinking, plans, and retirement ideas!

  1. Mini-van traded for full size truck, shell, truck bed layered with carpeted plywood cut to fit, with two beds and water bowl. They must travel in comfort of course. :)
  2. Add to that a travel trailer so that we all do our traveling around the country together~~no dog left behind, so to speak.
  3. Scrap plans for any trips to Europe, etc.
  4. Change decorating plans for sitting room area of large master bedroom~~now filled happily with two big dog beds (in addition to the ones in family room), assorted comforters, toys, nylabones.
  5. Cut back on grandchildren purchases and buy winter coats, fall coats, rain coats, cool coats, collars, & stuffies.
  6. Enjoy retirement years even more than anticipated!
