GAFNE in the news

Sylvie Monette & Jesse Andrews, faithful friends of GAFNE and loving adopters of Candy, Harry Who, Miz Baker and most recently, Britney, were featured in the October Delaware On-Line article by Robin Brown, "GREYHOUNDS: To know 'em is to love 'em - Finding a great companion is as easy as adopting".

"They're super affectionate," Sylvie said. "A wonderful, wonderful breed."

"They're smart and gentle -- gorgeous and adorable," Jesse Andrews said. "You look at them and wonder why anyone would want to harm them."

Click here to read the full article which was also the center spread story in the Nov/Dec Delaware Pets newspaper available in pet stores.

Way to go Sylvie and Jesse for generating more much needed and well deserved good press for GAF and all the hounds waiting for their forever homes!!!

We'd also like to thank Sylvie for setting up GoodSearch, a search engine which donates 50 percent of its revenue to the charities and schools designated by its users. It's a simple and compelling concept. You use GoodSerach exactly as you would any other search engine and it is powered by Yahoo! so you get proven search results. The money GoodSearch donates to your cause comes from its advertisers — the users and the organizations do not spend a dime!

The more people who use GoodSearch designating Greyhound Adoptions of Florida as their charity of choice, the more funds that can be raised to help greyhounds in our group.

Please visit goodsearch.com now to learn more and sign up.

Hound Sitting

Miz Baker

Did you know that GAFNE offers hound sitting?

The feeling of knowing that you can leave your greyhound in the hands of other owners who understand the breed, and can provide a loving and safe place for them to stay is priceless.

Reservations for hound sitting must be made at least 4 weeks in advance of your vacation. Available spaces fill up fast, so it is important that you make your request to us as soon as you know your travel plans.

If you are interesting in sitting let us know and if you'd like to schedule a sitter click here to complete a questionnaire so we can match you up with the best suited home for your grey(s).

We ask that you make a donation to our group for this service.

Are you available to hound sit? Please contact us.

News from Grey Haven

Christmas at the Farm
The holidays are a time of excitement and joy for most families. Here at the farm it is also a time of expectation and worry….will our generous friends contribute enough to keep Grey Haven going for another year? Will we be able to provide for every single dog on the farm? Will we be able to find good homes for most of them? Will more people begin to understand the plight of the racing greyhound in this country and the on-going need to reach out and help thousands of dogs each year?

Will we have the strength (both physical and emotional) to continue to do the best we can for so many dogs?

We are overwhelmed by the huge amount of holiday cards that appear in our post office box day after day…..lovely cards with wonderful messages of hope and joy for the coming season. Some contain a surprise donation and most have hand-written notes, commending all of us at GAF for taking so many of the broken leg dogs, the old dogs, the forgotten dogs….dogs who otherwise would fall through the cracks and be forgotten in the blink of an eye. The sentiment is appreciated and it is nice to have our work acknowledged

But the reality of the season is the fact that while we can heal most physical issues and mend many of the emotional ones, the one thing we cannot do for any of these special greyhounds is to adopt them and keep them all forever. Our small home is filled with the old, the sick, the unadoptable, the tripods, the seizure boy, the one who suffers from separation anxiety, thunder phobia…..you name it….we have it and there just is no more room to keep every special needs dog we bring into our program.

We need you to continue our work….to complete the circle of life for these dogs….to give them what they are waiting so patiently for….a home filled with love for the rest of their lives. Every one of these dogs gives back a thousand fold in response to genuine love and concern. This is the gift that knows no season or holiday…..it is the gift that you give each day, month after month, year after year to a creature who did not ask to be born, did not ask to race, did not ask to be hurt, sick or frightened. This is the time of year we ask you to think about opening your heart and your home to a special greyhound who has been sitting here at Grey Haven for months and months, waiting and hoping that you will come along and just once, notice him sitting alone in his crate.

We can only do so much…and you have all helped make our job so much easier. Now we ask you to complete what we have started…give the gift of permanence and love to one more greyhound.

Wishing all of you the happiest of holiday seasons and the healthiest of new years.

Unfortunately, it is an all too common occurrence - a retired racer that starts to resemble their "couch potato" nickname after they enter their new foster or forever home. In trying to adapt our newest family members to our homes, we tend to overindulge them. Some might say why shouldn't we? After all, they've often spent years running and living a rather regimented life. Don't they deserve a nice, comfortable place to spend retirement and some good food to eat?

Well, the answer is really yes and no. Once they adapt to their new homes and learn just how comfortable the couch really is (or, as in my house, the king-size bed), greyhounds are happy to spend much of their day napping and rarely have I seen a greyhound turn down a bowl of food because there is just too darn much in it. While it's great to indulge our new family members with a comfortable place to sleep and good food, we cannot do it at the expense of their health. In order to keep them healthy, we need to understand their changing metabolisms during different phases of their life, what to look for to best judge how much weight is too much, and what sort of activities are out there to keep our retired atheletes in great shape.

Holiday Floral & Food Safety Reminder from the ASPCA

While the pretty poinsettia has taken the brunt for many years now as "the" holiday hazard to pets, other frosty season favorites, holly and mistletoe, can be even more harmful for our four legged friends. Click on the following link to read the ASPCA article alert about keeping pets from puckering up around the mistletoe. You should also skip decking your boughs with live holly and no drinking from the Christmas tree either!

Be sure to keep bread dough and ready to bake rolls out of counter surfing distance to avoid potentially serious abdominal distress. Dogs who've eaten bread dough may experience abdominal pain, bloat, vomiting, disorientation and depression and can require surgical removal of the ingested dough.

Click here to read the article on why bread is a no-no in full.

Concerned that your grey ingested something it shouldn't? Don't delay, call your vet or the Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 immediately for assistance. Be sure to have the poison control number handy by your phone year-round.

Celebrating Greyhounds
Greyhounds Race Into the Hearts of Mutts Readers

Patrick McDonnell, creator of the popular comic strip,
Mutts, summed up Greyhound Adoption in eight simple, yet poignant panels in his latest "Shelter Stories" strip, this one about Flash, a racing greyhound.

Could the continued plight of racing greyhounds and the ongoing need for adoption be explained better?

Thank you Mr. McDonell, thank you.

FOSTERING

While thinking long and hard about what we ALWAYS need, it dawned on me that the one "item" we never have enough of is FOSTER HOMES.

While there are many dogs who do well going from the track to the kennel and then into a permanent home, there are so many more who would benefit from the guidance of foster parents. Fostering for these dogs would almost guarantee them permanence in their adoptive homes. They would learn their house manners….they would learn to live in a small pack of animals freely, not crated all the time….and their foster family would have the chance to observe them and understand the emotional make up of that particular dog. And that is the most important issue involved in deciding what sort of home that dog needs.

In the vast majority of returns, we find that the emotional needs of the dog were never met and that has caused the behavioral issues that sent the dog back to us. How wonderful it would be if we could eliminate most of our returns.

If you have ever thought about taking in a foster dog, now is the time to take that big step and DO IT!! You will have a wonderful support group behind you…..I guarantee you won’t be alone! We will certainly try to find a dog that will fit in with your animals and your life-style. We will discuss any issue that you are not comfortable with……we NEED your input, your opinion and your concerns so we can ALL do the best possible for your foster dog.

PLEASE…we are not asking for a lifetime commitment…just a month or two or three to help another greyhound become what your dog has become…..an important member of a family for the rest of it’s life.

Here are some greys currently in foster homes and looking for a forever home, maybe yours!
